PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: TRI-BUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade is a fiberated, rubberized adhesive with a bonding strength designed specifically for adhering modified bitumen and asphalt coated membranes to properly prepared surfaces. It sets by loss of solvent content through evaporation. Because of its ease of application and strong bonding, it is recommended for vertical application of modified bitumen cap sheets for flashing and detail work. TRI-BUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade has excellent low temperature flexibility. It does not require red label solvent identification.
USAGE: TRI-BUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade is especially formulated for use as a vertical flashing and detail adhesive for modified bituminous membranes. It has many advantages over the use of hot asphalt in applying modified asphalt sheets. It eliminates the hazard of hot kettle fires around industrial plants. Roofing can be applied under controlled conditions. The hazards of torch application, as well as hot asphalt fumes and odors are eliminated.
COVERAGE: Coverage is about 12.5 square feet per gallon applied 1/8” thick.
SURFACE PREPARATION: All surfaces to be coated must be dry, clean and free from oil, grease, rust, scale, loose paint, dirt and other foreign matter that would interfere with a good bond.
APPLICATION: Apply TRI-BUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade by trowel to a thickness of approximately 1/16˝ to 1/8˝ to all surfaces to be flashed. Apply liberally in joints, seams or cracks. If breaks are large, spread TRIBUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade and reinforce with polyester or glass fabric or modified bitumen embedded in fresh coating followed by a top coating of 1/8” thickness. The membrane manufacturer’s and NRCA application recommendations for flashing and detail work must be observed. Adhesive should be applied under normal environmental conditions without thinning.
PRECAUTIONS: TRI-BUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade does not freeze. Cold weather will cause it to stiffen, making application difficult. Store unopened container in a warm area for at least 24 hours before use. TRI-BUILT® Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade is ready to use. Do not thin. Do not heat container or store at temperatures greater than 110ºf. When transporting this product, be sure the container is secured and the lid is tight. Do not allow container to tumble as this may loosen the lid and allow leakage to occur. Do not use this product as a coating, or attempt to seal gravel, rubber, or pvc sheet roofing, or shingles of any kind.
IMPORTANT: Close air intakes on roof until solvents dissipate! Not recommended for use on EPDM or PVC sheet roofing, wood shingles or over gravel. Not to be used for modified bitumen single-ply products with polyethylene backing. Solvent vapor can penetrate porous roof decks such as wood, plywood, OSB, cementious wood-fiber panels, and lightweight concrete. The underside of these types of roof decks must be properly ventilated to the outside to prevent odor inside the building.
NOTE: This adhesive, like all asphalt-based products, forms a small amount of water soluble material as it weathers. Normally this is not noticeable because the rain washes it away. However, roofs having a pitch less than 1/2" per foot, or ones having poor drainage, will accentuate the problem by concentrating the water soluble material in low spots. If there is no rainfall, hose these roofs off to remove the water solubles. Frequent inspection of these roofs is recommended because abnormally rapid deterioration of any roofing material may occur where water stands for long periods.
CLEANUP: All equipment can be cleaned with mineral spirits. Use care in handling solvents. Clean hands with a waterless hand cleaner
WARNING! COMBUSTIBLE! Contains petroleum distillate. Keep away from heat and flame. Do not heat container or store at temperatures greater the 110º F. CLOSE AIR INTAKES on roof until solvents dissipate. Contains volatile solvents that might contaminate potable water. Close container after use. Dispose of container and unused contents in accordance with Local, State and Federal regulations. DANGER! HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED! If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. CALL A PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY! Use protective measures to avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of eye contact, open eyelids wide and flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION! USE ONLY WITH ADEQUATE VENTILATION! Avoid breathing of vapor. If you experience eye watering, headaches, or dizziness, leave area immediately or increase fresh air or wear respiratory protection (NIOSH/MSHA TC 23C or equivalent). Repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure to solvent vapor may cause permanent brain and nervous system damage, and may cause liver or kidney damage.
